Archways – Family Functional Therapy

Families First

What is Families First...
Families First is a service committed to helping young people aged 11-18 and their families struggling with: family conflict, youth-stress, behavioural, emotional, and relationship difficulties at home.

Who are Families First...
Families First is a team of caring professional therapists with qualifications in: counselling and child psychology, psychotherapy, and behaviour analysis. The Families First team are trained to work with families using [a programme called] Functional Family Therapy (FFT).

What is Functional Family Therapy...
Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is a family based therapy programme which has been developed for over 30 years. It is a programme that has been proven in a number of research studies to work for families and young people. It has been used successfully to treat young people and their families coping with relationship issues, emotional and behavioural problems at home, at school, and in the community. Studies show that FFT helps reduce violence and family conflict. FFT works by recognising the importance of family unity, working to improve family relationships, and enhancing family members support for one another.

What we do...
Functional Family Therapists believe that all families have strengths that are sometimes overshadowed by difficulties. One of the main goals of Functional Family Therapy is to help families to confront challenges by building positive interactions between family members and encouraging self-reliance and resourcefulness.

How do we do it...
The goal of our Families First therapists in serving families is: to help activate strengths, reduce stress, formulate ways to overcome problems, improve the quality of relationships, and help families achieve their own goals. The Families First team understand that it can be difficult for families to engage in regular therapy. So we offer a flexible and understanding service including working with families in the Families First office or in the family home.
